A Real Pain In The Neck

A Real Pain In The Neck

On a daily basis, people suffer from neck pain that can originate from a multitude of sources.  In some cases, the cause of pain may be as simple as stiff muscles following a night of sleeping in an awkward position, or repetitive overhead reaching causing a strain on the upper shoulders and neck.   In most cases, these symptoms should resolve on their own in 24 to 48 hours.  Neck pain that lasts in excess of 48 hours can be more troublesome and suggestive of a more serious problem.

Knowing when to take action can be the key ingredient in resolving your symptoms and allowing you to resume a pain-free lifestyle.  Generalized stiffness and discomfort can sometimes be effectively treated with a therapist-instructed home exercise program consisting of simple, yet effective, exercises and stretches.  Symptoms of a more advanced nature such as a progressive increase in pain, loss of range of motion, numbness and/or tingling extending into one or both arms, or loss of arm strength/grip strength require immediate attention.  Consulting with your physician and physical therapist about a comprehensive treatment plan can not only lead to relief or your symptoms, but a greater understanding of how to prevent future episodes from occurring.

Talk to your doctor or physical therapist today about your symptoms and take control of your symptoms before they take control of you.
